Grayson, KY– 06/10/2025— Kentucky Christian University’s Vice President of Enrollment and Marketing, John Penrose, was recently featured on the Higher Thinking on Higher Ed podcast, where he shared innovative strategies and deep institutional insights into the evolving landscape of student recruitment, digital marketing, and mission-focused communications in higher education.
Hosted by communications strategist Sharlyn Carrington, the episode spotlighted Penrose’s unique journey—from his background in both nonprofit and for-profit education sectors to his current leadership at KCU. Penrose emphasized how the university’s Christ-centered mission continues to drive its student engagement, marketing decisions, and operational focus.
“We’re moving away from the broad-net philosophy,” Penrose said. “Instead, we’re targeting mission-fit students—those seeking a Christ-centered education—and creating authentic, personalized experiences across every step of their journey.”
The conversation explored how KCU leverages data-informed strategies, community partnerships, and digital tools to connect with students who align with the university’s purpose. From geotargeted outreach at large Christian conferences to curated landing pages for specific events like nursing expos, Penrose explained how his team personalizes engagement through technology without losing the relational ethos of Christian education.
Penrose also discussed the increasing role of artificial intelligence in enrollment and marketing, noting KCU’s proactive use of AI to enhance response times and assist in creative processes—not to replace staff, but to equip them.
“AI is a tool in the toolbox, not a replacement for the work we do,” said Penrose. “Used well, it enhances creativity, efficiency, and student responsiveness.”
Additional highlights from the podcast included KCU’s plans to launch a dedicated digital newsroom and an AI-powered chatbot to support prospective students and current campus users, both slated for rollout within the next year.
Despite digital successes, Penrose acknowledged ongoing challenges in brand awareness and content coordination across campus.
“KCU has some remarkable academic outcomes—like our top 10 nurse practitioner program—but they’ve flown under the radar,” he said. “Building a culture of content creation and sharing is essential. We do a million dollars’ worth of great work here. We just need to tell that story more effectively.”
As Kentucky Christian University continues its commitment to academic excellence and spiritual formation, Penrose’s insights reflect the institution’s broader efforts to engage students with purpose, clarity, and conviction.
