Sometimes the only thing standing in the way of a better future is access to the tools needed for success, and for Johnson County residents who need to complete Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT), those tools are now easier than ever to obtain.
Twenty-five Johnson County residents can now receive the required MRT workbooks at no cost through the Big Sandy Community and Technical College Adult Education Program thanks to funding donated to the college by the Paintsville City Council. While MRT classes are already offered free of charge through BSCTC’s adult education program, participants are typically responsible for purchasing their required workbooks. The new funding covers those material costs for 25 residents, removing the final financial hurdle to completing the court-ordered program. This support was made possible through opioid abatement funds.
“At Big Sandy Community and Technical College, we are committed to giving every resident the opportunity to succeed,” said Dr. Samuel Todd Brand, president of BSCTC. “By removing financial limitations to MRT classes, we are helping residents take critical steps toward personal growth, family stability and brighter futures.”
BSCTC’s Adult Education Program offers MRT classes free to residents throughout its service area; participants are normally required only to purchase their workbooks. With access to this funding, Johnson County residents selected for the program can now complete the course entirely at no cost.
Individuals may be required to take MRT classes for a variety of reasons, ranging from family or custody issues to court-ordered parenting or domestic violence classes. Those who fail to complete the courses can face serious consequences, including family disruption or incarceration.
“Sometimes individuals do not take the classes because they cannot afford the required workbook,” said Tammy Castle, director of adult education at BSCTC. “Providing the workbooks removes the financial aspect altogether. It helps ensure the classes can be completed by those who need them, and we are extremely appreciative of the generosity of Mayor Runyon and the Paintsville City Council for their support.”
