PAINTSVILLE, Ky. (WSIP) – On Monday, Gov. Andy Beshear visited Johnson Central High School observing the positive impact that a nationwide program utilized by the school has had on students and teachers.
Johnson Central High School has the distinction of being a BARR School of Excellence, which stands for Building Assets, Reducing Risks. The program focuses on improving student success through stronger relationships with peers and school personnel.
Gov. Beshear thanked everyone for informing him of the program, while honoring the high school’s success at Governor’s Cup this year. The Governor visited a classroom and took part in a hands-on activity with students, before meeting educators and leadership of the BARR program.
“We’ve awarded more than $49 million for the construction of the new (Johnson Central) high school and career technical education center because y’all deserve it,” Beshear remarked.
School officials pointed out that Johnson Central has experienced unparalleled success in academics, ranking third academically overall in Kentucky, ranking first among public high schools statewide with student failure rates less than 2-percent, while holding a 96.8 percent graduation rate.
