The University of Kentucky football program is mourning the loss of redshirt freshman Nic “Happy” Smith. The Wildcats announced Monday that Smith has passed away. The former three-star recruit joined Kentucky in 2025 but did not see game action during his first season with the program. Head coach Will Stein called the loss a tremendous tragedy for the football family and university community. The cause of death has not been released.

Despite the somber news, Kentucky also received a boost on the recruiting trail over the weekend, landing three commitments for its highly-ranked 2027 recruiting class. Leading the group is Corbin defensive lineman Malachi Brown, one of Kentucky’s top in-state prospects. The Wildcats also secured commitments from Georgia linebacker Drew Williams and Florida wide receiver Austin Coles. Williams recorded 138 tackles and six sacks last season, while Coles is considered one of the nation’s top receiving prospects. Kentucky now has 21 commitments in the 2027 class and currently ranks 11th nationally and fourth in the SEC according to 247Sports.
